Oh the playroom. I have a love/ extreme dislike relationship with this room. On one hand, I love it! It allows all the toys to remain in one room and I’m able to keep it contained, but on the other hand, sometimes I want to set the whole room on fire!
I lost count on the number of times I’ve purged, cleaned, and re-organized our playroom. However, this time I think I finally found a system!
This is the playroom before. It was semi-clean and organized, however I still felt that it was very cluttered and everything just didn’t have a home. I’ve adopted an “if it doesn’t have a home, then it doesn’t belong” mantra.
I’m sharing my playroom storage system and hope that if you’re ready to set your room on fire, that I try to stop you before you do!

Found these gray + white bins at Target. The smaller gray + white bins are 11” and were $8, however I can’t find them anywhere! The bigger 13” cubes in the middle storage cube were $10, which isn’t bad considering how much they hold. They’re pretty durable and are great for my toddler. Unfortunately, both of these are out out stock or discontinued, but I’ve provided other affordable options. Some that I have in other areas of my home or ones that I thought about purchasing.

I love all the acrylic organizers! The containers are great for crayons, markers, or other arts & crafts supplies. The acrylic storage drawers and magazine holders are also great organizers for your coloring books/sketch books, arts & crafts supplies, or smaller toys. I also just love the way they look! It’s something about being able to see things and knowing they’re organized and labeled.
This storage unit is actually 3 separate storage units. They are the Kallax cubes from Ikea. The one in the middle is also the Kallax unit, however it is slightly bigger than the two on the end, but fit the 13” storage cubes perfectly. I didn’t know that the middle cube unit was slighter longer in depth than the ones on the end, but it actually doesn’t look so bad. I’m also in the middle of re-decorating the playroom and the middle cube will also be a little reading bench. I want to add a cushion to make it more comfortable. More on that DIY project soon.
MOM TIP:
When putting these units together, it’s always a good idea to use the anchor pieces to anchor the unit to the wall. This helps to avoid the unit from tipping over on your child. It’s an extra step that takes a little extra time, but goes a long way!
A few tips for making sure your playroom is more functional and less of a headache for you:
- Purge, Purge, Purge! I like to purge toys once a quarter.
- Declutter. Too many toys can just be overwhelming no matter how organized you are. I’m moving toward a simple and clean playroom with minimal toys. As you can see from the before, I’ve gotten rid of a lot of toys. I’ve heard of people doing a toy rotation, however for me that just sounds like more work. Do what works for you and what you’re comfortable with.
- Labels! I love looking at everything labeled, It just makes my organization OCD self so happy. I’m still in the process of reorganizing, but once I’m done all the bins and organizers will be labeled.
- Don’t stess about it. I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s a place where your kids play, create, and use their imagination! Don’t get so caught up in creating a pinterest-worthy playroom.
I hope this helps you approach and organize your playroom differently as much as it has helped me!
